Kurt Olsen easy chair

This rare wingback easy chair, model 211, was designed by Kurt Olsen and produced by Slagelse Møbelfabrik in Denmark in 1955. The chair is constructed with a sculptural solid rosewood frame that showcases the wood’s natural grain and warmth. Upholstered in cognac-colored aniline leather, the design features a wide, organically contoured backrest with a high head support and integrated wings, forming a continuous, enveloping shape around the sitter. The armrests are defined by angled rosewood supports that extend diagonally from the rear legs in a geometric V-shape and end in finely curved arm pads, adding to the chair’s architectural presence.

The seat is deep and slightly reclined, designed for comfort with a detachable cushion integrated seamlessly into the leather-covered base. The upholstery is tightly fitted with subtle contouring in the backrest that enhances ergonomic support. The entire structure rests on tapered round legs, with the rear legs slightly splayed to reinforce the chair’s reclining posture and stability.

Kurt Olsen was an influential Danish designer active in the 1950s and 60s, known for his refined cabinetry and seating designs. His collaboration with Slagelse Møbelfabrik produced many of his most innovative pieces, blending traditional craftsmanship with modernist aesthetics. Model 211 exemplifies this blend, representing a transition from traditional upholstery toward more sculptural and expressive modern forms, combining natural materials’ warmth with bold, structured lines.

This example is preserved in very good vintage condition, with a rich and even patina on the rosewood and minimal wear to the leather, reflecting careful use over time. The dimensions measure 81 centimeters in width, 85 centimeters in depth, and 93 centimeters in height, with a seat height of 39 centimeters (31.9 inches W x 33.5 inches D x 36.6 inches H, seat height 15.4 inches).
