Lennart Bender easy chairs
This rare pair of swivel easy chairs was designed by Lennart Bender and produced in Sweden during the 1960s. The design exemplifies Scandinavian mid-century modernism through its blend of comfort, industrial precision, and minimalist functional aesthetics.
Each chair features a deep, rounded shell-like seat that envelops the sitter, with integrated armrests and a continuous curved backrest. The structure is upholstered in the original black leather, which has developed a rich patina with natural creasing and surface wear typical for its age. The leather is tightly fitted over a molded internal frame, and the chairs include their original loose seat cushions made from the same leather, showing softening and signs of use consistent with vintage condition.
The base consists of chromed steel shaped into a four-pointed star with flat, flared feet, allowing full swivel rotation. This functional base underscores the chairs’ suitability as modern lounge pieces for both domestic and office environments. The chrome surfaces remain well-preserved with minor tarnishing and superficial wear.
Lennart Bender’s work, though relatively rare, represents the Swedish modernist ethos of ergonomic design and clean lines, emphasizing durable industrial materials such as chrome and leather. These chairs reflect that philosophy through their restrained geometry and high-quality materials.
Each chair measures 76.5 cm wide, 69 cm deep, and 70 cm high, with a seat height of 42 cm, approximately 30.1 inches wide, 27.2 inches deep, 27.6 inches high, and a seat height of 16.5 inches. The chairs are in well-preserved vintage condition with age-appropriate wear to the leather and minor surface wear on the bases.
