Library table
This very rare and unusually large library table, by an unknown designer and likely produced by Nordiska Kompaniet (NK) in Sweden during the 1940s, exemplifies Scandinavian mid-century design with pre-modernist influences. The piece combines functional craftsmanship with refined material expression, reflecting the transitional aesthetic between late Swedish Grace and early functionalism.
Constructed from walnut, the table features a rectangular top with softly rounded corners and a veneered surface exhibiting a deep, warm brown tone enhanced by characteristic walnut grain patterns and subtle figuring. The finish has a medium sheen, showing minor surface wear and an age-appropriate patina. The top rests on a substantial apron housing eight integrated drawers—four on each long side—each equipped with a small brass key-operated lock. The brass hardware is minimal and understated, supporting the overall functional clarity of the design.
The legs are square-tapered and flush with the corners, providing visual sturdiness balanced by the table’s low, proportional stance. The high-quality joinery and construction indicate production by a skilled cabinetmaker, consistent with NK’s atelier standards during the early to mid-20th century.
Though the designer remains unidentified, the table’s generous proportions and multiple drawers suggest it was intended for institutional or domestic libraries, reading rooms, or central workspaces requiring ample surface area and concealed storage.
The table measures 210 cm in width, 100 cm in depth, and 77 cm in height, approximately 82.7 x 39.4 x 30.3 inches.
