Lisa Johansson-Pape attrib. table lamps
These table lamps, attributed to Lisa Johansson-Pape and produced by Valinte Oy in Finland during the 1950s, are composed of brass, opaline glass, and a circular glass diffuser positioned at the top. The design is defined by a tall, tapered base made from matte opaline glass, which provides a stable form and softly diffuses the internal light source. Resting above the base is a cylindrical brass mesh shade with a fine diamond-patterned expansion, giving the lamps a precise and lightweight appearance. Small brass fasteners secure the mesh shade and allow the light to be filtered gently through the perforations.
The glass diffuser situated at the top of the lamps spreads the light evenly upward and downward, enhancing the glow within the opaline glass base while creating a warm tonal gradient through the brass mesh. This combination of materials reflects a distinctly Scandinavian approach to lighting, where structure, translucency, and surface pattern work together to create an atmospheric effect. The lamps emit a characteristic warm and textured illumination that shifts subtly depending on viewing angle and ambient conditions.
Lisa Johansson-Pape became a leading figure in Finnish lighting design during the mid-20th century, known for her clarity of form and sensitivity to how light behaves in different materials. Her work often emphasized functional simplicity paired with a strong awareness of the emotional and spatial qualities of illumination. These lamps align with her design language, although the attribution remains consistent with broader Valinte Oy production of the period, where experimentation with perforated metal and diffused light was common.
Both lamps are in excellent condition with small signs of usage consistent with their age. The brass mesh shows minor wear, while the opaline glass bases and glass diffusers remain intact and well-preserved. The lamps retain their original proportions and material presence.
Each lamp measures 22 cm in diameter and 40 cm in height, corresponding to approximately 8.7 inches in diameter and 15.7 inches in height.
