Lisa Johansson-Pape table lamp
This rare table lamp, model 40-013, commonly known as “Lady” or “Mademoiselle” was designed by Finnish lighting designer Lisa Johansson-Pape in 1954 for Stockmann-Orno. The design combines clear and colored glass with brass, creating a composition in which the structural and decorative elements are integrated into a single vertical form. The glass bases for this model were produced by Iittala in Finland.
The base is formed from clear glass with an internal section of deep blue glass. The blue element rises from the broad circular foot in an elongated, asymmetrical teardrop or flame-like shape, gradually narrowing toward the center of the clear body. Because the colored glass is enclosed within the transparent outer form, the appearance changes according to viewing angle and illumination. The clear glass body itself tapers upward from a wider base before narrowing into a tall neck, producing a continuous sculptural transition between the substantial lower section and the lighting fixture above.
A cylindrical brass fitting forms the transition between the glass body and the electrical components. Its warm golden tone contrasts with both the colorless glass and the saturated blue interior. The restrained use of brass is characteristic of Johansson-Pape’s approach, in which individual materials are clearly differentiated while remaining subordinate to the overall proportions of the object. The lamp is fitted with a newly made white fabric shade of truncated conical form.
Lisa Johansson-Pape (1907–1989) was one of the central figures in twentieth-century Finnish lighting design. She began working for the Stockmann-Orno in 1942 and subsequently designed lighting for domestic interiors as well as numerous public buildings and churches. Her work is associated with the development of Finnish modernism after the Second World War and is characterized by careful control of light, relatively simple geometry and an emphasis on the optical and material properties of glass and metal.
Model 40-013 dates from 1954 and is documented with the name Mademoiselle as well as Lady. The model was also included in Stockmann-Orno’s 1964 lighting catalogue, indicating that the design remained part of the company’s range beyond its initial introduction. The combination of industrial lighting components with specially produced colored glass places the lamp at the intersection of functional lighting design and the Finnish tradition of art glass.
The lamp is in good vintage condition with small signs of age and use. Minor surface traces and irregularities are visible in the glass and brass components, consistent with the materials and age of the piece.
The lamp measures approximately 40.5 cm (15.9 in) in overall diameter and 60 cm (23.6 in) in overall height, including the current shade.
