Jio Möbler lounge chair
This rare “Siesta” lounge chair with its matching ottoman was produced by JIO Möbler in Sweden during the 1960s and remains an exemplary piece of Swedish mid-century modernism. The design’s author is unrecorded, yet its combination of structural clarity and supremely comfortable form marks it as a thoughtfully conceived lounge ensemble. The chair’s sculptural oak frame, with its sharply tapering legs and angular side profiles, projects both visual lightness and architectural precision, while the ottoman mirrors these geometric lines to form a harmonious pair.
The solid oak exhibits a warm, golden patina that deepens in the areas most exposed to light and touch. Its linear grain waves along the legs and arm supports, highlighting the continuous curves and precise mitred joins at each corner. Recessed brass fasteners connect the structural members without interrupting the frame’s clean lines, their muted luster quietly reinforcing the integrity of the joinery. The slight splay of the legs provides stability and echoes the chair’s low, relaxed stance.
Both seat and ottoman tops have been newly upholstered in off-white natural sheepskin, a material long valued in Scandinavia for its insulating softness and tactile warmth. The upholstery conforms to an ergonomic, gently reclined curve in the chair, providing generous support for both back and thighs. Leather-covered buttons hold the covers in place, their subtle contrast of texture and tone integrating seamlessly with the surrounding sheepskin. The ottoman’s cushion matches the chair’s curvature, enabling a fluid extension of the body’s posture when feet are elevated.
Measured from floor to crest, the chair stands approximately 93 cm tall, spans 63.5 cm in width, and extends 115 cm in depth, with a comfortable seat height of 33 cm. The ottoman measures 58 cm wide by 50 cm deep and rises 39 cm high. In these generous proportions, the Siesta set offers an enveloping repose without overwhelming the surrounding space.
JIO Möbler, active in mid-century Sweden, produced furniture distinguished by its precise woodworking and honest use of materials. Although the designer behind the Siesta model remains unknown, the chair and stool’s refined execution, structural rhythm, and material contrasts align closely with the era’s pursuit of functional beauty. The restored condition of the upholstery combined with the oak’s subtle patina speak to both the set’s enduring craftsmanship and its careful stewardship over the decades.
