Mogens Koch bookcase
This modular set of six bookcases was designed by Mogens Koch in 1933 and produced by Rud. Rasmussen Snedkerier in Copenhagen, Denmark. The design represents one of the most iconic and enduring examples of Danish functionalism, combining precise joinery with architectural clarity and a strong sense of proportion. Koch’s modular system was conceived to adapt to both domestic and professional settings, allowing for free combinations that could evolve over time.
Each bookcase is crafted from solid pine with a warm, honey-toned surface and visible grain patterns that give the structure a natural depth. The precise dovetail joints and thin framing exemplify Rud. Rasmussen’s masterful cabinetmaking, known for its technical refinement and impeccable craftsmanship. The modular format allows the cases to be arranged in various configurations—stacked or side by side—maintaining a coherent rhythm in both horizontal and vertical compositions.
The bookcases are in excellent vintage condition with light signs of age and use, developing a fine, even patina that enhances the natural character of the pine. The surfaces retain a smooth luster, and the structural integrity remains strong, reflecting the high-quality materials and construction typical of Rud. Rasmussen’s production.
Mogens Koch’s design philosophy emphasized utility and timelessness, and this shelving system has become an enduring classic of Scandinavian modern design. Its restrained material expression, rational construction, and human scale continue to embody the values of mid-century Danish craftsmanship and design culture.
