Mogens Koch bookcase
This is a set of 10 modular bookcases designed by Mogens Koch in 1933 and produced by Rud. Rasmussen in Denmark. The units are crafted in solid pine with a rich amber tone and expressive grain patterns. Each bookcase measures 76 cm in height, 76 cm in width, and 27.5 cm in depth, which corresponds to approximately 29.92 inches by 29.92 inches by 10.83 inches. The depth is ideal for books, archives, and smaller objects.
The design consists of rectilinear open compartments of varying sizes, organized in balanced asymmetrical configurations. This approach maximizes usability while creating a rhythm of positive and negative space. The set includes one cabinet fitted with clear glass sliding doors, offering protection for more delicate items while maintaining visibility. Each module rests on a low pine plinth for elevation and alignment. Joinery details include precision-cut dovetails and inset back panels, reflecting the high craftsmanship standards of Rud. Rasmussen’s Copenhagen-based workshop.
The condition is very good, with only minor wear consistent with careful use and age. One unit shows cutouts at the rear. The remaining modules retain their original structure and surfaces. The pine has matured into a warm, slightly honeyed tone, with natural color variation adding to the depth and character of the ensemble.
Mogens Koch (1898–1992) was a Danish architect and furniture designer associated with the functional tradition of Kaare Klint. His modular bookcase system, conceived in the early 1930s, exemplifies his belief in proportional harmony, durability, and user flexibility. The system was designed to adapt to both books of varying heights and room dimensions, enabling endless recombination. Rud. Rasmussen, one of Denmark’s most esteemed cabinetmakers, collaborated with leading architects of the Danish modern movement, producing Koch’s furniture with exacting standards and noble materials.
This set represents a Danish modern classic, widely recognized for its architectural clarity and timeless utility. It is well-suited for libraries, studios, or interiors that prioritize refined craftsmanship, modular adaptability, and visual order.
