Mogens Koch bookcase
This is a rare set of eight bookcases designed by Mogens Koch and produced by Rud Rasmussen in Copenhagen, Denmark. Executed in elm, the units feature Koch’s modular design system developed in 1933, which allowed the bookcases to be used either stacked, mounted on walls, or placed as free-standing storage elements. The design emphasizes functionalism and proportion, with equal-sized compartments carefully dimensioned to fit books and objects with precision.
The elm wood displays a warm natural tone with visible grain, giving the modular construction both structural strength and a refined appearance. The craftsmanship is characteristic of Rud Rasmussen’s cabinetmaking tradition, where dovetail joints and fine detailing ensured durability and a timeless aesthetic. The bookcases are notable for their grid-like structure, where vertical and horizontal dividers create a consistent rhythm across the surface.
Mogens Koch, originally trained as an architect, designed these bookcases as part of his exploration into rational and flexible storage solutions. His work reflects the functionalist ideals of early 20th century Danish design, while also anticipating the mid-century modern emphasis on modularity and adaptability. Rud Rasmussen, one of Denmark’s leading cabinetmakers, was instrumental in bringing Koch’s designs into production, ensuring the highest quality execution.
The set is preserved in good vintage condition with signs of usage and a well-developed patina, which adds depth and authenticity to the elm surface. These bookcases embody both the functionalist principles of the 1930s and the enduring Scandinavian modernist tradition.
