Information

This set of eight bookcases was designed by Danish architect and designer Mogens Koch in 1933 and produced by the cabinetmaker Rud Rasmussen in Copenhagen. The bookcases are executed in Oregon pine, a material that emphasizes the warmth and natural texture of the wood. Koch’s modular bookcase system is one of the defining works of Danish functionalism, developed with the idea that furniture should be both adaptable and enduring. Each unit can be freely combined, allowing for flexible configurations suited to different interiors.

The design is characterized by its strict geometry, with square compartments creating a rational and balanced grid. The craftsmanship is evident in the precise joinery, including dovetail details at the edges, which highlight Rud Rasmussen’s reputation as one of Denmark’s most skilled cabinetmakers. Over the years, the pine has developed a rich patina, giving depth and character to the warm golden-brown surfaces. Some compartments feature subtle variations, such as sliding trays, offering functionality beyond open storage.

Mogens Koch, a student of Kaare Klint, approached furniture design with an architectural mindset. His bookcases were conceived as part of a system that could replace built-in furniture and evolve with the user’s needs, a concept that was radical at the time. This modularity has ensured the design’s continued relevance and enduring place within mid-century Scandinavian design history.

The set is in good vintage condition with visible signs of use and a well-preserved patina that speaks to decades of careful use. The minimalist form combined with precise detailing places the bookcases firmly within the Scandinavian modern tradition, where functionalism, natural materials, and craftsmanship intersect.
