Nils Fougstedt table mirror
This very rare table mirror was designed by Nils Fougstedt and produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden in 1931. It stands as an early example of Scandinavian modern design, influenced by the functionalist movement that was emerging at the time. The frame of the mirror is crafted from pewter, a material that was frequently used in Fougstedt’s designs. The pewter has a subtle patina and soft metallic sheen, contributing to the piece’s understated elegance. The mirror itself is encircled by a thin pewter bezel, which complements the minimalistic aesthetic of the design. This restrained approach allows the materials and form to take precedence, making the mirror both functional and visually pleasing.
The mirror is supported by a foldable stand made from a combination of wood and metal. This stand provides stability to the mirror while maintaining a lightweight and versatile structure, in keeping with the functionalist principles of simplicity and practicality. The compact design allows for easy portability, making it a versatile piece suitable for various spaces and uses.
Nils Fougstedt (1881–1954) was a prominent Swedish designer and sculptor who became well-known for his innovative use of pewter in both decorative arts and everyday functional objects. He was an influential figure at Svenskt Tenn, the Swedish design firm founded by Estrid Ericson in 1924. Fougstedt’s work, known for its simplicity and refined craftsmanship, played a crucial role in shaping the aesthetic principles of Swedish functionalism during the early 20th century. His pieces, like this mirror, helped to establish the distinctive blend of artistry and utility that became synonymous with Swedish design.
Svenskt Tenn was a key advocate of Scandinavian modernism, producing objects that balanced artistic expression with practical use. This mirror, as part of the company’s early collection, marks a transitional period in design. Moving away from ornate historicism, it embraced cleaner, more geometric forms. The use of high-quality materials and attention to detail in the craftsmanship ensured that these objects not only maintained their beauty but also their functional integrity over time.
The mirror remains in good vintage condition, with some signs of age-appropriate wear. The pewter frame has developed a natural patina, which enhances its authenticity and charm. The glass itself is well-preserved, with only minor traces of use consistent with its age.
The dimensions of the mirror are 35.5 cm in width, 18 cm in depth, and 34 cm in height (14 x 7 x 13.4 inches).
