Otto Schulz attrib. easy chairs
This pair of rare and early easy chairs is attributed to Otto Schulz and was produced in Sweden during the 1930s. The chairs are constructed with solid wood frames and are upholstered in Niger leather, a high-quality vegetable-tanned leather known for its durability, nuanced texture, and warm patina that develops over time. The leather has aged gracefully, showing signs of natural wear consistent with age and use, while retaining its rich cognac coloration and tactile quality. The leather is secured with a continuous row of decorative brass rivets along the backrest, seat, and arm profiles. A stylized scroll motif is formed using rope or cord and brass-headed nails on the backrest, adding a distinctive ornamental detail typical of Schulz’s decorative approach.
The seat cushions are upholstered in the original green patterned fabric, featuring a repeating lattice motif in gold. This textile retains historical integrity and presents moderate signs of wear, maintaining an authentic period presence. The chairs rest on tapered legs, with the front feet capped in dark wood, subtly grounding the composition.
Otto Schulz was a German-born architect and designer who became a central figure in Swedish decorative arts and furniture design during the first half of the 20th century. He is known for his work with Boet, the interior design firm he co-founded, and for pioneering the integration of luxurious materials with craftsmanship in modern domestic interiors. His work often features decorative detailing, high-quality leathers, and balanced proportions that reflect both the Art Deco aesthetic and Nordic sensibilities.
These chairs are representative of early Scandinavian Art Deco furniture, where classicism and craft coalesce with a modern edge. Their structural compactness and ornamentation reveal a transitional character between 1920s decorative traditions and 1930s modernism.
Each chair measures 61.5 cm in width, 70 cm in depth, and 74 cm in height, with a seat height of 43 cm. In imperial units, this corresponds to approximately 24.2 inches wide, 27.6 inches deep, 29.1 inches high, and a seat height of 16.9 inches.
