Information

This very rare pair of easy chairs was designed by Otto Schulz and produced by Boet in Sweden during the 1930s. Schulz, a German-born architect and designer who settled in Gothenburg, is considered one of the leading figures of Swedish decorative arts between the wars. As founder and artistic leader of Boet, he created furniture and interiors that combined sculptural boldness with refined craftsmanship. His work often balanced modern functionalist tendencies with more expressive and decorative forms, resulting in highly distinctive pieces.

The chairs are crafted in ash with their original silk fabric upholstery still preserved. The light golden-beige tone of the silk is paired with the warm honey hue of the ash frame, creating a harmonious and elegant appearance. The upholstery is vertically channeled along the backrest, emphasizing the rounded, wing-like form that envelops the sitter. The chairs rest on short, slightly splayed legs that give them stability while keeping the proportions low and inviting. Their silhouette is characterized by soft, organic curves that express Schulz’s ability to merge comfort with sculptural form.

In terms of condition, the chairs remain in good vintage state, showing signs of age and patina consistent with their nearly century-old history. The silk has aged gracefully, and while it displays some wear, its survival adds authenticity and a rare sense of continuity to the design. The ash frames display a natural patina that enhances the depth and warmth of the wood.

As an example of Scandinavian mid-century design before the full dominance of functionalist austerity, these chairs illustrate a transitional moment in Swedish furniture history. Schulz’s work at Boet bridged traditional craftsmanship and progressive design, and his pieces are today sought after by collectors and museums for their rarity and sculptural elegance.
