Paavo Tynell ceiling lamp
This unique and custom-ordered ceiling lamp was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland during the 1940s. Crafted from copper and brass, the lamp features a wide, shallow dome with a perforated surface, suspended by two elegantly curved metal rods attached to the ceiling mount. Decorative wire elements, arranged in stylized floral motifs around the rim, lend an ornamental touch to the otherwise functional form. The lower section includes a geometric, cross-shaped diffuser with a fine metal grid, designed to ensure even light dispersion.
The copper surface displays a warm patina typical of aged metal, with minor wear consistent with its vintage age. Brass accents—found in the suspension rods and decorative wirework—provide a contrasting warmth, enriching the material composition and depth of the lamp.
Paavo Tynell (1890–1973), a Finnish designer and lighting pioneer, was known for merging industrial materials with delicate handcrafted details. As co-founder of Taito Oy, he played a key role in shaping Finnish modernist lighting. His designs frequently incorporated perforated metal, organic motifs, and subtle decorative elements. Tynell’s work was sought after for private homes as well as public and institutional spaces, including hotels and government buildings.
Taito Oy was among Finland’s leading mid-20th-century lighting manufacturers, noted for collaborations with Tynell and producing high-quality brass and copper fixtures. Many of their pieces were limited editions or custom commissions.
Measuring 60 cm (23.6 inches) in both diameter and height, this lamp’s sculptural form and fine materials exemplify Tynell’s refined craftsmanship and artistic vision. It stands as a rare example of custom lighting by one of Scandinavia’s most celebrated designers.
