Paavo Tynell ceiling lamp

This ceiling lamp, model 1090, was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland during the 1940s. The structure combines brass, glass, and a distinctive shade composed of thin wooden slats arranged on a metal frame. The design emphasizes a balance between natural materials and refined metalwork, a characteristic approach of Tynell’s mid-century output. The upper brass section consists of a ceiling cup and a long, slender stem that supports the main body of the lamp. Below, a softly tapered opaline glass diffuser forms the central light chamber, with a warm, slightly amber tone that provides gentle illumination.

Surrounding the glass body, the shade crafted from thin wooden slats is arranged in concentric patterns, producing a textured surface that filters light in a distinctive manner. The slats are connected with fine bindings along a structural metal frame, resulting in a precise and rhythmic pattern. At the base of the glass diffuser, a decorative brass finial composed of looping wire elements adds a sculptural detail, highlighting Tynell’s characteristic use of small ornamental flourishes.

Paavo Tynell is recognized as one of Finland’s most influential lighting designers, known for merging craftsmanship, material warmth, and an elegant lightness in form.
