Paavo Tynell ceiling lamps
This ceiling lamp is a rare model Tähtitaivas, also known as Starry Sky, designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Idman in Finland. The fixture features a rectangular white-lacquered metal body with softly rounded corners and a distinctive perforated pattern of small circular holes. The underside is fitted with a brass grid that diffuses the light and creates a warm, atmospheric glow, a design characteristic often associated with Tynell’s approach to lighting. The cylindrical brass ceiling mount complements the composition and anchors the lamp visually to the ceiling.
Paavo Tynell, often referred to as “the man who illuminated Finland” was a pioneering figure in Finnish lighting design and a co-founder of the lighting company Taito. His work is celebrated for blending functionality with delicate, poetic details such as perforations, brass elements, and indirect light diffusion. The Tähtitaivas model reflects his signature style, turning functional lighting into a decorative object that enriches the spatial experience by casting intricate light patterns reminiscent of a starlit sky.
The lamp is in good vintage condition with small signs of age and patina, particularly on the brass grid, which enhances the authenticity and character of the piece. The perforated metal surface and brass components retain their original finish, contributing to the lamp’s historical value and mid-century charm.
