Information

This ceiling lamp, model A2-7, was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Idman in Finland. It is a fine example of mid-century Scandinavian lighting design, combining refined materials and a functional form with a subtle decorative presence. Tynell, often referred to as the “man who lit up Finland,” was renowned for his ability to merge modern simplicity with delicate details, creating timeless pieces that balanced industrial production with a sense of craftsmanship.

The lamp consists of a cylindrical opaline glass shade, which softly diffuses the light, creating an even and warm illumination. The glass is paired with brass detailing, including concentric circular elements mounted beneath the diffuser, which are characteristic of Tynell’s design language. These brass components show light patination from age, enhancing their golden tone with an authentic vintage surface. When illuminated, the lamp reveals a layered lighting effect, with a glow radiating both through the glass and reflecting against the brass rings, a technique Tynell often used to soften electric light into something more atmospheric.

Produced by Idman, one of Finland’s most important lighting manufacturers of the 20th century, the piece reflects the high standard of Scandinavian design and production from the period. Idman collaborated with leading designers such as Tynell to create lamps that became icons of both public and private interiors in Finland and internationally. The model A2-7 is particularly rare and demonstrates the company’s dedication to quality materials and precise detailing.

The lamp is in excellent condition, with well-preserved opaline glass and brass showing expected aging consistent with its vintage character. It measures 27 cm in diameter (10.6 inches) and 19 cm in height (7.5 inches), making it suitable as a flush mount ceiling lamp for both domestic and architectural contexts.
