Paavo Tynell ceiling lamp
This rare and large ceiling lamp, designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland during the 1950s, is a prime example of mid-century Nordic lighting design, combining elegant craftsmanship with functional innovation.
Constructed from brass, lacquered metal, and glass, the lamp features a domed metal shade finished in soft yellow lacquer. The shade is perforated with delicate decorative holes, which create a star-like pattern of light when illuminated, adding an atmospheric and artistic quality to any room. The brass frame at the base of the shade supports a frosted glass diffuser, which evenly softens the light for a warm, ambient glow.
The lamp’s suspension system includes an adjustable counterweight mechanism, allowing the height to be varied between 117 cm and 160 cm, providing both practical versatility and aesthetic flexibility—a hallmark of Tynell’s thoughtful design approach.
Paavo Tynell was a celebrated Finnish designer known for blending traditional metalworking skills with modernist design principles, producing lighting that is both sculptural and highly functional. His work for Taito Oy remains highly sought after by collectors and design enthusiasts worldwide.
The lamp is in good vintage condition, showing natural patina and wear on the brass components consistent with its age. Its dimensions are 52 cm in diameter and an adjustable height from 117 to 160 cm (20.5 inches Ø, height adjustable between 46 and 63 inches).
