Paavo Tynell ceiling lamp
This rare ceiling lamp, model 1088, was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Idman in Finland during the 1950s. It features an opaline glass shade shaped as an elegantly curved, shallow bowl that diffuses light softly and evenly. The glass is suspended from a slender brass rod connected to a matching brass ceiling canopy. Beneath the glass shade, a decorative brass element composed of interlocking loops adds a sculptural detail, characteristic of Tynell’s refined yet ornamental design language.
Paavo Tynell, one of Finland’s most celebrated lighting designers, was renowned for merging modernist simplicity with delicate, nature-inspired detailing. His work significantly shaped the Scandinavian lighting aesthetic, often incorporating brass and soft organic forms. Idman, a Finnish lighting manufacturer, collaborated closely with Tynell to produce many of his iconic designs, emphasizing high-quality craftsmanship and timeless style.
This lamp embodies the core principles of Scandinavian Modernism by combining functional lighting with artistic elegance. The opaline glass shade delivers warm, diffused illumination, while the brass framework ensures durability and sophistication.
The lamp is in good vintage condition, exhibiting a natural patina on the brass and minor signs of age on the glass shade consistent with its period. It measures 40 cm in diameter and 110 cm in total height (approximately 15.7 by 43.3 inches).
