Information

This very rare and large ceiling lamp was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland during the 1940s. Crafted from brass and opaline glass, the fixture features a floral-inspired composition with six glass shades, each shaped like a tulip bud. These shades are arranged in a radial cluster and supported by gently curved brass arms. The tulip-shaped glass diffusers, in a soft cream tone, emit a warm and ambient light when illuminated, creating a serene and inviting atmosphere. The lamp’s upper stem and ceiling canopy are made from polished brass, enhancing its luxurious yet refined character.

The lower portion of the lamp is distinguished by finely worked brass leaves and flowers, crafted from wire and perforated sheet metal. These decorative botanical elements extend outward and upward, mimicking natural forms while providing the lamp with a dynamic and sculptural presence. The intricate craftsmanship reflects Tynell’s fascination with the intersection of nature, artisanal techniques, and modern design, making this piece a stunning example of his ability to merge organic motifs with functional lighting.

Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) was a seminal figure in Finnish lighting design and a co-founder of Taito Oy, the company that produced much of his work during the mid-20th century. Tynell’s designs are known for combining refined metalwork with delicate forms, often inspired by natural elements. His lighting fixtures were widely used in both public and private interiors and are now considered among the most collectible and architecturally significant pieces from the Scandinavian modern era.

This ceiling lamp remains in excellent vintage condition, with only minor wear consistent with age and original use. It stands as a striking and rare example of mid-century Scandinavian decorative lighting, celebrated for its scale, craftsmanship, and the lyrical quality of its design.

The dimensions of the lamp are 100 cm in diameter and 150 cm in height, equivalent to approximately 39.37 inches in diameter and 59.06 inches in height.
