Information

This pair of ceiling lamps, model 1076, was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Idman in Finland during the 1950s. Each lamp features a large circular shade constructed from muted green fabric, tightly pleated into a radial pattern. The fabric is pulled toward a central brass fitting, creating a soft, sculptural form that diffuses light evenly across its surface. The design emphasizes the interplay between textile and metal, a characteristic approach in Tynell’s mid-century work.

The central fixture is executed in polished brass and incorporates decorative wire elements arranged in looping forms beneath the domed brass plate. These brass details provide a refined focal point at the center of the lamps. The combination of the pleated fabric and the brass structure allows the lamps to produce a gentle, atmospheric illumination. When lit, the pleats become visually pronounced, and the light spreads outward with a subtle halo effect on the ceiling.

Paavo Tynell, considered one of Finland’s most influential lighting designers, was known for his use of handcrafted metalwork, textile shades, and delicate ornamentation. During the 1950s, Tynell designed several lamps for Idman, a Finnish manufacturer recognized for its high-quality production and long-standing collaborations with leading designers. The model 1076 exhibits Tynell’s distinctive aesthetic, merging functional lighting with decorative sophistication. The large textile shade provides a soft surface that complements the meticulous brass detailing at the core of the lamp.

Each lamp measures 100 cm in diameter, equivalent to approximately 39.4 inches, and 27 cm in height, corresponding to approximately 10.6 inches. The pair is in excellent condition, with only small signs of use visible on close inspection, consistent with careful preservation of original materials.
