Information

This rare ceiling lamp was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland during the 1950s. The lamp exemplifies Tynell’s refined and poetic approach to lighting design, combining brass and glass in a suspended structure. A polished brass central rod extends from a wide, trumpet-shaped ceiling canopy down to a shallow, bowl-shaped glass diffuser. The glass is subtly opaline, diffusing light warmly and evenly when illuminated. Below the glass bowl, an ornamental brass finial features a cluster of curved brass wire loops, creating a decorative element that is both sculptural and reflective.

The extensive use of brass, from the structural stem to the decorative details, is characteristic of Tynell’s aesthetic. Over time, the brass surfaces have developed a natural patina that enhances the lamp’s material depth and historic character. The design’s restrained yet expressive form reflects Scandinavian mid-century ideals, blending functional elegance with artisanal craftsmanship.

Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) was a seminal figure in Finnish lighting design and co-founder of Taito Oy in 1918. The company played a pivotal role in shaping Finnish lighting throughout the first half of the 20th century. Tynell’s work is distinguished by delicate brass use, intricate perforation patterns, and decorative yet modern forms, often drawing inspiration from natural motifs.

This lamp is in very good vintage condition, with minimal wear and consistent patina on the brass components. The glass shade is intact without visible cracks or chips, and the lamp is fully functional. The dimensions are 41 cm in diameter and 86 cm in height, approximately 16.1 inches wide and 33.9 inches high.
