Information

This is a very rare pair of ceiling lamps, model K2-33, designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland during the 1950s. These fixtures were custom-made for the Church of Kuopio in Finland, emphasizing their exclusive and architectural nature. Each lamp is constructed entirely of brass and features a wide, shallow, perforated bowl suspended below a naturalistic, sculptural arrangement of stylized botanical forms. The organic brass ornamentation consists of elongated leaves and coiled floral details rising from the center, introducing a three-dimensional element that adds visual drama and a strong decorative identity.

The brass bowl diffuser is circular in form and slightly concave, with finely drilled perforations arrayed in concentric circles. These micro-perforations emit pinpoints of light when the lamp is illuminated, generating a luminous constellation-like pattern that enhances the ambient atmosphere. The light source is housed inside the central floral cluster and projects both downward through the bowl and upward into the sculptural arrangement, giving depth and dynamic shading to the composition.

The piece is suspended from the ceiling canopy by three discrete vertical rods, maintaining an airy and delicate structure despite the physical scale. The brass components have aged gracefully and exhibit a warm, consistent patina with surface wear and oxidation in line with the lamp’s age and provenance.

Paavo Tynell was one of Finland’s foremost lighting designers, celebrated for his integration of natural motifs and artisanal metalworking into the vocabulary of Scandinavian modernism. As a co-founder of Taito Oy, Tynell brought traditional craftsmanship to modern lighting design, favoring brass and hand-perforated surfaces to create poetic and atmospheric lightscapes. The K2-33 model is an exceptional example of Tynell’s ecclesiastical and commissioned works, where design takes on a ceremonial and symbolic function.

Each lamp measures 70 cm in diameter and 125 cm in height, equivalent to approximately 27.6 inches in diameter and 49.2 inches in height. They are preserved in good vintage condition, with visible signs of age, including patina and minor imperfections, consistent with their use in a mid-century public architectural setting.
