Information

Very rare and exceptional table lamp designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland during the 1950s. This highly sculptural model exemplifies Tynell’s celebrated ability to combine refined craftsmanship, atmospheric lighting and decorative elegance within a distinctly modern Scandinavian form.

The lamp is executed entirely in brass with a cylindrical parchment-like shade suspended between four slender vertical rods rising from a circular pierced base. The construction creates a remarkably light and architectural silhouette despite the substantial scale. The brass surfaces have developed a warm natural patina over time, enhancing the depth and character of the material while emphasizing the handmade quality associated with Taito’s production during the period.

The shade is particularly distinctive, composed of vertically textured material that diffuses the light softly and evenly. When illuminated, the lamp emits a rich amber glow while the perforated brass top projects delicate decorative light patterns outward into the surrounding space. The pierced top plate forms an intricate radiating motif, a characteristic detail strongly associated with Paavo Tynell’s work and his fascination with combining functional lighting with poetic decorative effects.

The four sculptural brass finials positioned across the top further accentuate the refined decorative language of the piece. These ornamental details, together with the balanced proportions and carefully engineered construction, demonstrate the exceptional level of craftsmanship for which Taito became internationally recognized. The open construction between the base and shade allows the lamp to retain an airy appearance while creating dramatic light reflections and shadows when lit.

Marked by Taito Oy and “Made in Finland” to the underside.

The lamp remains in good vintage condition with minor signs of age and use consistent with time. The brass has acquired an even patina, contributing to the authentic period character of the piece. Diameter: 40 cm / 15.7 in, Height: 72 cm / 28.3 in
