Information

The exceptionally rare table lamp model 9212, designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland, is a masterful embodiment of mid-century Nordic design. Known for his poetic and refined approach to lighting, Tynell imbues this lamp with both elegance and material subtlety, characteristic of his most sought-after works.

The lamp is composed primarily of brass, with a distinctively flared, cone-shaped shade that showcases a series of fine perforations arranged in decorative motifs. These perforations serve not only as ornamentation but also as functional apertures that diffuse light softly, casting patterned shadows and enhancing the ambient quality of the illumination. The brass has aged beautifully, with a rich patina that reveals the lamp’s history and adds visual texture and tonal variation across its surfaces.

The central stem is gently curved, contributing a sense of lightness and motion to the composition. Part of the stem is wrapped in leather, which introduces a tactile contrast to the brass and offers an ergonomic grip. The leather is in good vintage condition, showing signs of age with minor wear and darkening that deepen its visual character. This combination of materials—brass and leather—exemplifies Tynell’s ability to merge industrial and handcrafted elements in a harmonious and human-centered design.

The circular brass base is simple and balanced, anchoring the more expressive upper components. It is inscribed with the model number and the name of the manufacturer, Taito Oy, confirming the authenticity of the piece. Taito Oy, where Tynell served as artistic director, was the leading Finnish lighting manufacturer of its time, producing many of the designer’s most iconic creations.

Condition is very good, with the lamp remaining structurally intact and fully functional. The surface patina on the brass and the minor wear on the leather are consistent with age and careful use, enhancing the overall authenticity and collectible quality of the piece.

Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) is widely regarded as one of Finland’s most influential lighting designers. His work is characterized by a graceful synthesis of form and function, with many of his lamps now considered classics of Scandinavian modernism. Model 9212 stands out for its architectural restraint, delicate detailing, and rich material language, making it a significant example of his oeuvre.
