Percival Lafer sofa
This rare sofa was designed by Percival Lafer and produced by Lafer MP in Brazil. It features a solid hardwood frame combined with original leather upholstery, which exemplifies the robust yet inviting qualities of Brazilian modern design. The structure is characterized by its exposed wooden frame and suspended leather support system, a hallmark of Lafer’s engineering approach to comfort and durability. The cushions are generously padded, tufted, and finished in natural tan leather, designed to soften with age and develop a distinctive patina.
Percival Lafer, active from the 1960s onward, became one of Brazil’s most recognized furniture designers by combining modernist aesthetics with innovative production techniques. His works emphasized accessibility and ergonomics while retaining the richness of Brazilian materials. Lafer’s designs are known for their modular construction, comfort-oriented forms, and inventive use of tropical hardwoods in combination with leather, reflecting both international modernism and distinctly Brazilian sensibilities.
This example is preserved in excellent condition with only minor signs of usage. The leather retains its natural texture and rich tone, while the hardwood frame remains sturdy and well-kept. Subtle wear consistent with age and light use contributes to its authenticity and character.
The sofa measures 200 cm in width, 100 cm in depth, and 85 cm in height, with a seat height of 38 cm (78.7 x 39.4 x 33.5 inches, seat height 15 inches). Its proportions and detailing reflect Lafer’s pursuit of informal yet sophisticated living environments, making it a distinguished piece within the canon of Brazilian modern furniture.
