Peter Hvidt & Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen easy chair
This rare easy chair, model FH-6135 also known as the X-chair, was designed by Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen and produced by Fritz Hansen in Denmark in 1959. The chair is executed in laminated mahogany with its original natural leather seat and backrest, which have developed a deep, even patina over time. Its name derives from the distinctive X-shaped frame, a hallmark of Hvidt and Mølgaard-Nielsen’s ability to merge technical innovation with organic form. The design exemplifies their exploration of laminated wood construction and their interest in creating light yet structurally expressive furniture.
The sculptural frame displays refined craftsmanship, with smooth curves and precise joinery that give the piece both strength and visual fluidity. The slightly reclined seating angle and cut-out backrest enhance comfort while emphasizing the chair’s elegant silhouette. The use of laminated mahogany not only contributes to its visual warmth but also allows for the characteristic slender, curved profile that defines much of the duo’s work.
Peter Hvidt (1916–1986) and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen (1907–1993) were among the most influential Danish designers of the mid-20th century. Their studio was a key force in shaping postwar Scandinavian furniture, combining traditional cabinetmaking expertise with modernist principles. Collaborations with Fritz Hansen, France & Søn, and Søborg Møbelfabrik produced some of the most technically sophisticated designs of the period, often employing advanced lamination and modular concepts.
This example remains in good vintage condition, showing signs of use and a rich patina consistent with age. The leather retains its original tone and texture, with natural wear that enhances its authenticity and character. The wood structure is solid and well-preserved, underscoring the longevity of both material and craftsmanship.
