Information

This is a rare mid-century table lamp designed by Pierre Forssell and manufactured by Skultuna in Sweden during the 1950s. The lamp is made entirely of brass and features a vertically oriented cylindrical body with a distinctive two-part composition. The lower portion is smooth, polished brass forming a closed cylindrical base, while the upper section consists of a perforated brass tube with a hand-pierced surface. The result is a tactile, visually rhythmic structure that diffuses light through a pattern of circular perforations, casting radiating shadows and light patterns when illuminated.

The brass has developed a rich, naturally aged patina, with tonal variations and surface oxidation enhancing its sculptural quality. The patina is consistent with careful long-term use, preserving the integrity of both the metal and the finely executed surface work. The lamp is in good vintage condition and remains fully functional, with signs of use that add depth and character without detracting from its aesthetic or structural presence.

Pierre Forssell was an influential Swedish metal designer, trained as a silversmith and active with Skultuna from the late 1940s through the 1960s. His work is known for its disciplined formalism and tactile detail, often balancing traditional brass craftsmanship with modernist clarity. Forssell’s lighting designs frequently explored how material treatment could influence the interplay of light and shadow, resulting in functional objects that also functioned as sculptural elements within a space.

Skultuna Messingsbruk, established in 1607 under royal charter, has maintained a legacy of high-quality metalwork in Sweden. During the 20th century, the company collaborated with several key designers, including Forssell, to produce works at the intersection of fine art, craft, and industrial design. Their production in this period was central to the Scandinavian modern movement, combining artisanal techniques with modernist aesthetics.

The design reflects mid-century Scandinavian principles of material honesty, minimalism, and human-centered detail. The perforated structure not only serves an aesthetic role but also regulates and softens light emission in a manner that engages its environment.

The dimensions are 40 cm in height and 9 cm in diameter, which is approximately 15.7 inches tall and 3.5 inches in diameter.
