Pierre Forssell table lamp

Information

This rare table lamp was designed by Pierre Forssell and produced by Skultuna in Sweden during the 1950s. The lamp is a finely executed example of Scandinavian mid-century metalwork, combining sculptural form with a decorative lighting function. Made entirely of brass, it features a cylindrical body with a dual finish—smooth and polished on the lower half, and perforated and textured on the upper half. The top portion consists of a pierced, reticulated brass cylinder with irregularly arranged circular openings, giving the surface a porous, lace-like quality.

The material displays a natural golden hue, enriched by areas of patina that accentuate the contrast between the sleek base and the coarser perforated section. When lit, the lamp casts a radial pattern of light and shadow onto its surrounding surfaces, creating a dynamic and atmospheric illumination effect. This shadow play is a key aspect of Forssell’s lighting designs, where function and ornament are integrated through the careful handling of material and light.

The lamp measures 9 centimeters in diameter (3.5 inches) and 22 centimeters in height (8.7 inches). Its condition is very good, with minor surface wear and oxidation consistent with age and use, especially around the textured upper section. The base retains its clear Skultuna maker’s mark, including the crown insignia and model stamps.

Pierre Forssell was an influential Swedish designer and silversmith, active from the 1940s to the 1980s. He was best known for his work in brass and stainless steel, particularly for Skultuna, one of Sweden’s oldest design foundries established in 1607. Forssell’s work is characterized by minimal forms, artisanal attention to surface, and a strong concern for how objects perform in space. This table lamp exemplifies his approach—merging traditional materials with modernist form—and stands as a refined object both as a source of light and as an autonomous sculptural piece.
