Pierre Forssell box
This rare brass box with coasters was designed by Pierre Forsell and produced by Skultuna in Sweden during the 1950s. The set represents a fine example of Scandinavian mid-century design, where craftsmanship and functional precision meet material richness. Forsell’s work for Skultuna is distinguished by its sculptural minimalism and refined handling of brass surfaces, both of which are clearly demonstrated in this piece.
The box is made of solid brass with a removable lid featuring a textured, patinated surface that creates a unique organic pattern with deep golden tones and accents of red and brown. The coasters are crafted from polished brass rims inset with mother-of-pearl discs, producing a subtle contrast between the warm metallic frame and the iridescent surface of the shell. The natural veining and luster of the mother-of-pearl add depth and individuality to each piece. The underside of the box bears the Skultuna 1607 mark, denoting its origin from Sweden’s historic brassworks founded in the early 17th century.
Pierre Forsell worked as a designer for Skultuna from the late 1940s through the 1960s, where he introduced a range of lighting and metal objects characterized by precision and restraint. His designs, such as this one, bridge artisanal tradition with modernist aesthetics, reflecting the evolution of Scandinavian decorative arts in the postwar period.
The set is in excellent vintage condition with minor signs of wear consistent with age. The brass surfaces show a well-preserved patina, and the coasters maintain their original mother-of-pearl finish.
