Information

This sculptural brass decanter, designed by Pierre Forssell and produced by Skultuna in Sweden during the 1950s, embodies the pared-back elegance and precision typical of Scandinavian modernist design. The form is minimalist and architectural, yet imbued with material richness, reflecting Forssell’s disciplined aesthetic and Skultuna’s long tradition of refined metalwork.

The body of the decanter is composed of solid brass, shaped into a flattened, elliptical form with crisp, defined edges and slightly convex sides. The silhouette is subtly tapered, narrowing as it rises toward a short, cylindrical neck that forms the spout. This transition from the broad, stable base to the upright spout creates a poised visual balance, while also emphasizing the vessel’s functionality. The spout is completed by a removable stopper, which features a cylindrical wooden grip set into a brass collar—providing a tactile contrast between the dark-stained wood and the warm tone of the aged brass.

The surface of the brass is left unpolished, bearing a natural patina that has developed over time, with subtle variations in tone and small areas of oxidation. These traces of age contribute to the object’s visual depth and reinforce its authenticity as a mid-century design. The craftsmanship is precise and understated, with no extraneous decoration—only the inherent qualities of form, proportion, and material defining the object’s character.

Pierre Forssell (1925–2004) was a key figure in Swedish design during the postwar period, known for his work in brass, silver, and pewter. Educated at Konstfack in Stockholm, he became artistic director at Skultuna Messingsbruk in the 1950s, where he guided the company’s transition toward modernist design principles. His designs are celebrated for their clarity, restraint, and enduring material presence, and he is especially noted for elevating utilitarian objects—such as candleholders, tableware, and containers—into refined sculptural forms.

Skultuna, founded in 1607 by royal decree, is one of the oldest continuously operating brass foundries in the world. In the mid-20th century, under Forssell’s creative direction, the company embraced a modernist program that preserved its tradition of craftsmanship while aligning with the aesthetics of Scandinavian functionalism.

The decanter measures 15 cm in width, 10 cm in depth, and 18 cm in height (approximately 5.9 × 3.9 × 7.1 inches). It remains in good vintage condition, with natural patina and surface irregularities consistent with age and material. As both a utilitarian object and a sculptural form, this decanter stands as a testament to Forssell’s ability to distill everyday functions into objects of formal clarity and enduring elegance.
