Pierre Forssell vase
This rare brass vase was designed by Pierre Forssell and produced by Skultuna in Sweden during the 1950s. The piece is a sculptural example of Scandinavian mid-century metalwork, combining a strict cylindrical body with an expressive, crown-like rim that gives the vase a distinctive architectural character.
The vase is executed in solid brass, presenting a warm golden tone with areas of darker oxidation and subtle surface variation. The cylindrical body is smooth and vertically oriented, while the upper edge is cut into a rhythmic sequence of rounded peaks, each topped with a spherical brass element. This detail introduces a strong graphic and sculptural quality, contrasting the otherwise restrained form. The interior remains plain and functional, suitable for use as a vase or as a standalone decorative object.
The condition is good vintage condition. The surface shows minor signs of use consistent with age, including light scratches, small marks, and an even patina that has developed over time. These characteristics are typical for brass objects from this period and contribute to the visual depth of the material rather than detracting from it.
Pierre Forssell was a prominent Swedish designer known for his work in metal, particularly brass, and for his long collaboration with Skultuna. His designs often balance industrial precision with expressive form, and he played a key role in shaping Swedish modern metal design during the mid-20th century. Skultuna, founded in 1607, is one of the world’s oldest brass foundries and is renowned for its high-quality craftsmanship and long-standing tradition of working with leading designers.
The vase is representative of mid-century Scandinavian design, where material honesty, sculptural form, and functional clarity are combined into a cohesive object with strong visual presence.
The dimensions are approximately 8.5 cm in diameter and 24 cm in height (3.35 x 9.45 inches).
