Poul Henningsen ceiling lamp
This ceiling lamp was designed by Poul Henningsen and produced by Louis Poulsen in Denmark during the 1950s. It represents a rare example of Henningsen’s pioneering approach to glare-free lighting, utilizing a multi-shade system to precisely diffuse and direct light with softness and efficiency.
The lamp consists of three concentric, descending shades surrounding a central bulb. The uppermost shade is crafted from red-lacquered metal, while the two lower shades are made of white opaline glass. The red enamel top reflector directs most of the light downward, while softly reflecting some light upward and outward to create an even illumination throughout the space. The interplay of the warm red enamel with the neutral white glass balances visual warmth and functional clarity, characteristic of mid-century color sensibilities.
The suspension system includes a dark oxidized metal counterweight and canopy, allowing vertical adjustment of the lamp’s height. This adjustable design feature reflects Henningsen’s commitment to versatility, enabling the lamp to accommodate different spatial and lighting requirements.
The lamp is in good vintage condition, exhibiting typical wear including patina on the metal components. The middle glass shade has undergone a visible but structurally sound repair, which is disclosed for transparency. All original parts are present and fully functional.
Poul Henningsen (1894–1967) was a groundbreaking Danish designer and theorist, renowned for his innovative lighting designs. His collaboration with Louis Poulsen resulted in the PH lamp series, grounded in logarithmic light diffusion principles aimed at minimizing glare and enhancing ambient quality. Henningsen’s lamps are celebrated for combining scientific insight with sculptural elegance.
Louis Poulsen, established in 1874, is a leading Danish lighting manufacturer known worldwide for producing functional and refined designs. The PH series is emblematic of Scandinavian modernism and continues to be highly regarded for its integration of technology and aesthetic form.
The lamp measures 40 cm in diameter and 120 cm in height (approximately 15.75 x 47.24 inches).
