Poul Henningsen ceiling lamp
This very rare ceiling lamp is the PH-5/5 model, designed by Poul Henningsen and produced by Louis Poulsen in Denmark during the 1920s. It is a key piece from the iconic PH series, which revolutionized lighting design with its glare-free, layered approach to light distribution. This early model is particularly significant, as it is marked with “PAT. APPL” indicating its pre-patent status and early production origin, making it an exceptional example of Henningsen’s work.
The PH-5/5 features a three-shade system. The large upper shade is made of yellow-lacquered metal, while two descending nested shades are crafted from white enameled metal and frosted opaline glass. The design of this lamp directs light both downward and outward in a soft, diffused pattern, eliminating harsh glare and providing even illumination. The fixture is suspended from a cylindrical metal stem, which displays classic industrial detailing characteristic of early Louis Poulsen models, contributing to its overall simplicity and functionality.
Poul Henningsen (1894–1967) was one of Denmark’s foremost lighting designers, renowned for his scientific approach to creating glare-free lighting. His collaboration with Louis Poulsen, which began in the 1920s, was instrumental in shaping modern Danish lighting design. The PH system, developed by Henningsen, is a landmark in lighting history, emphasizing the importance of light diffusion and human comfort. The careful geometries of the shades were designed not only for aesthetic appeal but to ensure the light emitted from the fixture was harmonious and functional.
This example is in good vintage condition, showing typical signs of age and use, such as surface wear, patina, and crackling of the inner lacquer layer, which is especially visible upon close inspection. These signs of aging add to the authenticity and historical value of the lamp, reflecting its origins in the early production years of the PH series.
Stylistically, the PH-5/5 lamp is a prime example of early functionalist design, where form follows function, and materials are chosen for their utility. The lamp’s balanced proportions, coupled with its innovative light control, make it a quintessential piece of Scandinavian modern lighting history, embodying both the technical expertise and artistic vision that define Poul Henningsen’s legacy.
