Poul Henningsen ceiling lamp
This very rare ceiling lamp, model PH-5/5, was designed by Poul Henningsen and produced by Louis Poulsen in Denmark during the 1930s. The lamp features a distinctive combination of yellow-lacquered metal and opal glass, arranged in a three-shade system that exemplifies Henningsen’s pioneering approach to glare-free illumination and layered light diffusion.
The design comprises a large upper metal shade finished in deep ochre-yellow lacquer, beneath which are two concentric internal diffusers crafted from white opal glass—one conical and one cylindrical. This arrangement produces a balanced distribution of soft, ambient light while minimizing direct glare. The entire fixture is suspended from an aged brass canopy and fitting, which exhibit a patina consistent with the lamp’s age and history. As part of the PH series developed in the late 1920s and 1930s, this early model with glass diffusers reflects both the technical refinement and functionalist aesthetics characteristic of the period.
Poul Henningsen was a seminal figure in 20th-century lighting design and instrumental in shaping Danish modern lighting through his collaborations with Louis Poulsen. The PH-5/5 was among the early lamps in the PH system, designed specifically for domestic interiors, notable for its compact size and technical sophistication.
This example is in good vintage condition, showing signs of age and use. The lacquered metal surface has minor wear and spotting, while the glass diffusers have light scratches and a small chip on the edge of the middle shade. The original suspension and brass components retain their patina and remain fully functional.
The lamp measures 45 cm in diameter and 34 cm in height, approximately 17.7 inches wide and 13.4 inches tall. This piece represents a key moment in the evolution of modern lighting design, combining form and function with enduring elegance.
