Poul Henningsen ceiling lamp
This rare ceiling pendant, model PH 5/5, was designed by Poul Henningsen and produced by Louis Poulsen in Denmark during the 1950s. It features Henningsen’s patented three-shade system, developed in the 1920s, which delivers glare-free illumination through carefully calculated reflections and diffusions.
The upper shade is crafted from spun metal, finished in yellow lacquer on the exterior with a white underside to optimize light reflection. The two lower shades are made of opal glass, softly diffusing the light while contributing to the lamp’s sculptural presence. The glass elements have a translucent quality with visible textural variations and minor imperfections typical of vintage hand-worked glass.
The lamp’s form emphasizes horizontal layering, with a wide, shallow top shade and stepped diffusers beneath. It includes a darkened metal socket cover and a textile-covered suspension cord. The central socket housing bears the word “PATENTED” referencing Henningsen’s innovative approach to light control.
The pendant is in good vintage condition, showing wear consistent with age and use, including some surface wear on the lacquer and small nicks along the glass edges.
This lamp exemplifies mid-century Scandinavian modernism, combining functionalist principles with sculptural elegance. It measures 56 cm in diameter and 33 cm in height, with a total drop including the ceiling mount of approximately 65 cm (about 22 inches wide, 13 inches high, and 25.6 inches total drop).
