Poul Henningsen ceiling lamp
This rare and early ceiling lamp is the model PH-4,5/4, designed by Poul Henningsen in the 1930s and produced by Louis Poulsen in Denmark. It features the designer’s innovative three-shade system, originally developed in the mid-1920s, which ensures a glare-free, evenly diffused light. The lamp retains its original copper shades, now displaying a rich patina that has developed naturally over time, adding to its character and historical authenticity. The shades are stamped with both “Patented” and “PH-4” confirming its early production status.
The fixture has a layered construction with a wide upper shade, a mid-sized secondary reflector, and a cylindrical lower element, all proportioned to control and soften the light output. The copper’s surface shows a warm reddish-brown tone with darker oxidation patterns, complemented by the darker metal suspension hardware. This combination gives the lamp a distinct industrial yet refined aesthetic, typical of early modernist Scandinavian lighting.
Condition is good vintage, with visible signs of age, surface marks, and oxidation consistent with its age and original materials. The structure is sound, and the lamp functions as intended, casting a warm, inviting light when illuminated. The original patina has been preserved, avoiding over-restoration to maintain authenticity.
Poul Henningsen (1894–1967) was one of Denmark’s most influential lighting designers, renowned for his deep understanding of light diffusion and glare reduction. His collaboration with Louis Poulsen resulted in iconic lighting designs that combined technical innovation with sculptural form. The PH-4,5/4, with its copper construction and early production details, represents a sought-after example of his prewar work.
Stylistically, this piece reflects the early modernist Scandinavian approach—functional yet elegant, crafted with high-quality materials, and designed to enhance both the quality of light and the aesthetics of a space. Its proportions and materiality make it both a historical design artifact and a practical lighting solution.
