Poul Henningsen ceiling lamp
This rare ceiling lamp, model Langelinie, was designed by Poul Henningsen and produced by Louis Poulsen in Denmark during the 1950s. It features concentric copper shades with a white-lacquered interior, a hallmark of Henningsen’s approach to achieving glare-free, evenly distributed light. The stepped, layered construction exemplifies his ongoing exploration of light diffusion and functional beauty, creating a warm, atmospheric illumination while maintaining sculptural presence.
The lamp’s copper surface has developed a soft patina over time, adding depth and character to its warm metallic tone. The precision in the curvature and spacing of each ring demonstrates Louis Poulsen’s technical excellence and commitment to craftsmanship. The Langelinie model, named after the famous Copenhagen promenade, is one of Henningsen’s rarer designs and represents a transitional period in his lighting work, moving from the strictly functional to forms of increased architectural expression.
Poul Henningsen (1894–1967) remains one of the most influential lighting designers of the 20th century. His collaboration with Louis Poulsen began in the 1920s and defined the company’s identity through a series of innovative, scientifically based lighting solutions. Henningsen’s philosophy centered on creating lamps that provided soft, diffused light, replicating the qualities of natural daylight.
This example remains in good vintage condition, showing small signs of use consistent with age and preserving its original copper finish. It is a finely balanced piece of mid-century Scandinavian design, merging engineering precision with artistic integrity.
