Poul Henningsen ceiling lamp
This ceiling lamp is the rare PH-Basket / PH-2 model designed by Poul Henningsen and produced by Louis Poulsen in Denmark during the 1930s. The fixture represents an early and important phase in Henningsen’s lifelong work with glare-free lighting, where form, proportion, and material were carefully balanced to achieve a controlled and comfortable distribution of light.
The lamp is constructed from browned brass with a warm, aged surface that shows an even and attractive patina. The organically curved brass arms form a basket-like structure, from which the light sources are suspended. Each arm supports Henningsen’s characteristic multi-layered shade system in original white glass, designed to soften the light and direct it downward while minimizing glare. The contrast between the darkened metal and the translucent glass creates a refined and expressive visual presence, both illuminated and unlit.
The PH-Basket / PH-2 is an early example of Henningsen’s systematic approach to lighting design, where mathematical principles and empirical testing guided the shape and spacing of the shades. This model is notable for its sculptural quality and generous scale, making it suitable as a central ceiling fixture in larger rooms while still providing a warm and balanced light.
The lamp is in good vintage condition, with minor signs of use consistent with age. The brass retains its original surface with light wear and oxidation, and the glass shades are well preserved with no significant damage observed. These signs of age contribute to the authenticity and historical character of the piece.
Dimensions are approximately 85 cm in diameter and 75 cm in height, corresponding to about 33.5 by 29.5 inches.
