Poul Henningsen table lamp
This rare table lamp, model PH-3/2, was designed by Poul Henningsen and produced by Louis Poulsen in Denmark between 1927 and 1928. The lamp features Henningsen’s early patented three-shade system, here marked “PAT. APPL.” on the inner frame, a hallmark of his pioneering approach to light diffusion and glare control. The design demonstrates Henningsen’s technical precision and his interest in shaping light quality through mathematically calculated shade proportions.
The lamp is constructed in browned brass with original copper shades that have developed a rich, naturally aged patina over time. The layered shade system consists of a large upper reflector and two smaller, nested shades that direct light evenly, creating a soft, functional illumination. The combination of darkened metal and copper tones contributes to its warm, sculptural presence even when unlit.
Poul Henningsen (1894–1967) was one of Denmark’s most influential lighting designers and a key figure in the development of modern Scandinavian design. His collaboration with Louis Poulsen began in the 1920s and defined the company’s direction toward technical innovation and architectural lighting. The PH-3/2 model represents the earliest generation of his multi-shade concept, which became a foundation for subsequent designs such as the PH 4/3 and PH 5.
This example remains in excellent vintage condition with age-appropriate wear and a fine patina consistent with its period. The materials retain their original finish, showing subtle variations that emphasize the authenticity and craftsmanship of the piece. The lamp measures 42 cm in height and 29 cm in diameter, equivalent to approximately 16.5 inches high and 11.4 inches in diameter.
