Information

This rare and early table lamp, model PH-4/3, was designed by Poul Henningsen and produced by Louis Poulsen in Denmark during the formative years of his groundbreaking collaboration with the manufacturer. Dating to 1927–1928, as indicated by the “PAT. APPL.” marking, this lamp is among the earliest examples of Henningsen’s influential multi-shade lighting system—an innovation that remains foundational to modern lighting design.

The PH-4/3 table lamp embodies Henningsen’s core philosophy of glare-free, softly diffused light achieved through a carefully calculated system of concentric shades. In this model, the three-tiered glass shade configuration ensures that light is directed downward while being gently dispersed outward, producing a consistent and shadow-free illumination. The shade set, executed in amber-hued glass, not only serves a functional purpose but also adds a visual warmth and atmospheric glow when the lamp is lit.

The base and stem are constructed in solid brass, showing a deep, natural patina that has developed over nearly a century. The cylindrical stem rises from a rounded base, supporting the shade structure with discreet mechanical precision. The proportions are well-balanced, and the combination of glass and brass typifies the material elegance of Henningsen’s early designs. Subtle signs of age, including minor surface wear and oxidation on the metal components, enhance the lamp’s historic character while preserving its integrity.

Poul Henningsen (1894–1967) was a seminal figure in Danish modernism, known not only for his design work but also for his contributions as a theorist and critic. His lighting designs—particularly the PH series developed with Louis Poulsen—were guided by scientific principles of light reflection and human comfort, leading to fixtures that were as innovative technically as they were aesthetically refined. The PH-4/3 is one of the many variations developed from Henningsen’s modular system, tailored to domestic interiors requiring soft, glare-free task or ambient lighting.

Louis Poulsen, one of Denmark’s leading lighting manufacturers since the early 20th century, played a crucial role in bringing Henningsen’s designs to market and in advancing the modernist approach to lighting. This early model stands as a testament to their partnership and to a pivotal moment in the evolution of electric lighting design.

In excellent vintage condition relative to its age, this PH-4/3 table lamp retains all original components, including its marked brass hardware and hand-formed glass shades. As a rare, early production piece with documented historical markers, it is a highly collectible artifact within the canon of 20th-century design—bridging scientific innovation, craftsmanship, and aesthetic vision.
