Poul Henningsen table lamp
The PH-2/2 ‘The Question Mark’ table lamp is a very rare model designed by Poul Henningsen in the 1930s and produced by Louis Poulsen in Denmark. Stamped “Patented” it features a distinctive curved stem in patinated brass, giving the lamp its name, paired with original white opal glass shades. The design follows Henningsen’s renowned three-shade system, developed to eliminate glare and create evenly diffused light. The brass shows an aged surface with a warm, natural patina, while the glass shades display minor age-related marks consistent with the period. Overall, it is in good vintage condition, with signs of usage and a patina that contribute to its historical authenticity.
Poul Henningsen (1894–1967) was a central figure in Danish lighting design, known for his meticulous studies of light distribution and his ability to merge technical innovation with aesthetic refinement. The ‘Question Mark’ model exemplifies his work in combining sculptural form with functional purpose, offering adjustable directional light within a visually striking silhouette.
Louis Poulsen, established in 1874, became an international leader in modern lighting through its long collaboration with Henningsen, producing some of the most iconic Scandinavian designs of the 20th century. This lamp, from the interwar period, represents both the high craftsmanship of early production and the modernist ideals that shaped Nordic design during the era.
