Poul Hundevad stool
This folding stool, model Guldhøj (PH 43), was designed by Poul Hundevad and produced by his own workshop in Vamdrup, Denmark during the 1960s. The design is an interpretation of an Iron Age folding stool discovered in the Guldhøj barrow in Denmark, adapted by Hundevad into a modern, functional object that maintains a close relationship to the archaeological original.
The frame is executed in wengé, with turned and sculpted elements that form an intersecting X-shaped structure. The wood displays a deep, warm brown tone with linear grain patterns typical of wengé. The seat is suspended in original olive-colored leather, cut with semicircular apertures that allow it to lace onto the horizontal rails. The leather contributes both flexibility and comfort, slightly sagging under weight, while retaining a strong visual presence due to its color and patination.
Poul Hundevad is known for his interest in historical Scandinavian forms and his ability to translate them into modern furniture with refined craftsmanship. The Guldhøj stool is among his most recognized designs, representing a fusion of cultural heritage, material quality, and mid-century functionalism. The piece reflects Scandinavian modernism’s broader engagement with tradition, craft, and nature, executed through a minimalist lens.
The stool is in good vintage condition with small signs of use consistent with age. The leather shows natural wear and coloration that contribute to its authenticity and material character. The folding construction remains functional and stable.
