Poul Hundevad stool
This rare folding stool, model Guldhøj or PH 43, was designed and produced by Poul Hundevad in Vamdrup, Denmark, and stands as a refined example of mid-century Danish design. Drawing inspiration from the ancient Guldhøj burial mound, where a similar Bronze Age stool was discovered, this piece exemplifies the merging of historical reference with modern functionalism.
Crafted from solid teak, the frame displays a rich reddish-brown hue with a finely finished surface that reveals the natural grain and warmth of the wood. The craftsmanship is evident in the precise joinery and the elegant tapering of the legs, which are gently curved and organically shaped. These sculptural legs provide both stability and visual lightness, emphasizing Hundevad’s mastery in working with wood to achieve both strength and aesthetic refinement.
The seat is made from natural tan leather, stretched across the frame with a subtle sag to conform to the sitter. The leather has developed a soft patina with age, displaying light tonal variation and minor creases that enhance the stool’s vintage authenticity. The combination of teak and leather produces a tactile and material richness typical of Scandinavian design, where durability and elegance coexist.
The stool incorporates a clever and compact folding mechanism. When not in use, it can be folded flat for efficient storage or transport—an expression of the functional versatility that was central to Danish design ideals during the postwar period. Despite its portability, the stool remains robust and comfortable in use, suitable as an occasional seat or decorative object.
Condition-wise, the piece is in excellent vintage condition. The teak retains its original luster with minimal signs of wear, and the leather seat is intact, evenly aged, and structurally sound. All folding elements function smoothly, and no restoration appears necessary.
Poul Hundevad (1917–2011) was known for his commitment to quality and functionality, often producing designs in small series with a high degree of craftsmanship. The Guldhøj model is among his most iconic works, combining cultural reference, sculptural form, and practical design in a compact and elegant format.
The stool measures 48.5 cm in width, 38 cm in depth, and 37 cm in height. In inches, this corresponds approximately to 19.1 inches wide, 15 inches deep, and 14.6 inches high.
