Poul Hundevad stool
This folding stool, model Guldhøj or PH 43, was designed by Poul Hundevad and produced by Poul Hundevad & Co. in Vamdrup, Denmark, during the 1950s. The frame is constructed from solid teak, carefully shaped to reveal smooth, organic curves that emphasize the natural grain and warmth of the wood. Structurally, the stool consists of two intersecting X-shaped supports joined by a horizontal stretcher, creating a balanced and sculptural form that combines stability with aesthetic refinement.
The seat is made of natural leather, original to the piece, and is attached to the wooden frame using a laced fastening system. Over time, the leather has developed a rich patina, displaying variations in tone and surface textures that contribute to the stool’s authentic character. This material pairing of teak and leather reflects the mid-century Scandinavian design ethos, where craftsmanship and functional elegance merged with organic shapes and natural materials.
Poul Hundevad was a Danish designer and cabinetmaker recognized for blending historical inspiration with modern craftsmanship. The PH 43 stool draws its lineage from the ancient Guldhøj stool, a folding seat discovered in a Bronze Age burial mound in Denmark. Hundevad’s design reinterprets this historical form through contemporary materials and construction techniques, preserving its original essence while adapting it to modern interiors.
The stool measures 48.5 cm in width, 38 cm in depth, and 37 cm in height (19.1 x 15 x 14.6 inches). Its lightweight and collapsible design enhance its practicality, making it both a functional and sculptural object within mid-century Scandinavian furniture design.
