Poul Kjærholm PK-33 stool
This stool is a rare example of Poul Kjærholm’s PK-33 model, designed in 1959 in Denmark and produced by E. Kold Christensen. Kjærholm was known for combining industrial materials with refined craftsmanship, creating a minimalist yet elegant expression that has become emblematic of Danish modern design.
The stool features a circular seat upholstered in original brown leather, which has developed a deep patina and visible signs of age, giving it character and authenticity. The surface shows natural creasing and wear consistent with its vintage nature, yet remains structurally sound. The leather is fixed with a central button detail, enhancing the sculptural quality of the seat.
Supporting the seat is a chromed steel frame composed of three bent legs, a design signature of Kjærholm’s work that emphasizes lightness and strength. The steel structure is precise and functional, with the legs subtly angled to ensure stability while keeping the overall form visually delicate. The underside bears the manufacturer’s stamp, confirming its production by E. Kold Christensen, the exclusive producer of Kjærholm’s early furniture before Fritz Hansen took over in later decades.
The PK-33 is stylistically connected to Kjærholm’s exploration of modularity and reduction, where circular and geometric elements define his seating series. Its compact proportions made it suitable as a stool, side seat, or complement to his lounge chairs.
The stool measures 52 cm in diameter and 33 cm in height (20.5 x 13 inches).
