Poul Kjærholm stool
This rare foldable stool, model PK-91, was designed by Poul Kjærholm in 1961 and produced by E. Kold Christensen in Denmark. The stool consists of a flat, brushed steel frame with precise, intersecting lines forming an X-shaped support. The seat is made of sand-colored canvas that is stretched tightly between the frame, creating a minimal and functional surface. The construction allows the stool to be easily folded, showcasing Kjærholm’s focus on practicality and refined engineering.
The flat steel frame shows a natural, even patina with minor scratches and surface wear consistent with age and use. The canvas seat displays slight discoloration and wear, which adds to the character of the piece while maintaining its structural integrity. This model reflects Kjærholm’s dedication to industrial materials and his ability to elevate them into sculptural, architectural furniture.
Poul Kjærholm (1929–1980) was a Danish designer celebrated for his disciplined approach to furniture design, combining modernist principles with an appreciation for craftsmanship. He was particularly known for his use of steel, which he treated with the same respect traditionally given to wood in Scandinavian furniture-making. E. Kold Christensen was Kjærholm’s exclusive producer during his lifetime, ensuring the highest quality in execution and finish.
The PK-91 stool is an icon of mid-century Scandinavian design, embodying simplicity, elegance, and versatility. Its collapsible design and clean geometry make it suitable as a functional piece of furniture as well as a collectible design object.
