Rocking chair
This mid-century children’s rocking chair was produced in Denmark during the 1960s and is crafted entirely from rattan and cane. The design showcases a lightweight yet sturdy frame with an organically flowing silhouette, created through expertly bent and wrapped rattan elements that interlace for both structural support and visual expression.
The form features a continuous rocking base, gently rounded at both ends, supporting a low, ergonomically scaled seat and backrest. Its fluid lines evoke a stylized, almost zoomorphic shape, reminiscent of a bird or abstract animal figure. The upward-curving backrest culminates in a looped crest that serves as a decorative flourish as well as a practical handle for easy carrying or repositioning.
The rattan displays a warm golden-brown tone with natural texture, visible nodes, and a patina developed through age, including minor scuffs and slight color variations. Split cane bindings tightly secure the structural joints, reflecting careful craftsmanship.
The chair is in good condition with wear appropriate to its age, including minor surface abrasions and slight inconsistencies in the cane wrapping. Structurally, it remains sound and true to its original form.
This piece exemplifies mid-century Scandinavian design’s embrace of natural materials and organic shapes, thoughtfully adapted into a playful and functional children’s chair.
