Information

This very rare pair of easy chairs, model 56/2 ‘Bambi’, was designed in 1954 by Rolf Rastad and Adolf Relling and produced by Gustav Bahus in Norway. The chairs are crafted from solid teak, paired with original cognac brown saddle leather for the seat and backrest. The design is notable for its light, sculptural frame, with organically curved armrests that flow seamlessly into the rear legs, and a suspended leather seat that offers both comfort and a visually open construction.

The teak frames display fine joinery and a softly rounded profile, typical of high-quality Scandinavian cabinetmaking from the mid-20th century. The cognac leather retains its warm, rich tone, with signs of use and an appealing patina that attest to the age and authenticity of the pieces. The leather is attached using looped and stitched detailing that enhances the handcrafted appearance and emphasizes the designers’ attention to material expression.

Rolf Rastad and Adolf Relling were key figures in shaping Norwegian mid-century design, known for their commitment to functional elegance and their work with some of the country’s most skilled furniture manufacturers. The ‘Bambi’ model, with its minimalist lines, ergonomic form, and combination of natural materials, exemplifies the mid-century Scandinavian approach of uniting craftsmanship with modern design ideals.

Dimensions: Width 65 cm (25.6 inches), Depth 61 cm (24 inches), Height 70 cm (27.6 inches), Seat Height 35 cm (13.8 inches).
