Adolf Relling

Adolf Relling (1913–2006) was a Norwegian interior architect and furniture designer recognized for his important contribution to Scandinavian functionalism and postwar Norwegian design. Through his work, Relling combined modern architectural clarity with traditional craftsmanship, creating furniture and interiors defined by practicality, material warmth, and restrained elegance.

Biography

Born in Sykkylven on Sunnmøre, Relling grew up in a strong craft tradition and trained as a cabinetmaker before studying at the Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry in Oslo under architect Arne Korsmo and painter Arne E. Holm. His education was further shaped through work at Hiorth & Østlyngen, study visits to Stockholm, and travels to Finland, experiences that exposed him to the broader Scandinavian modern movement.

In 1943, Relling co-founded the influential architectural and design office Rastad & Relling together with Rolf Rastad. The partnership became one of the most significant contributors to Norwegian postwar interior and furniture design. While Rastad managed the furniture business, Relling primarily led the architectural and interior design office.

Their commissions included interiors for the Norwegian Parliament, the Grand Hotel in Oslo, the Norwegian America Line, and several important public institutions and commercial spaces. Relling also designed furniture for a number of Norwegian manufacturers, including Gustav Bahus in Bergen.

Throughout his career, Relling’s work was characterized by balanced proportions, functional simplicity, and a sophisticated understanding of materials. Today, he is regarded as an important figure in the development of Norwegian modern design and Scandinavian mid-century interiors.
